The Western Herald is the student run newspaper at Western Michigan University. The paper has been in print since 1916.

This project was handled by me and my intern colleagues. Our goal was to give the Western Herald a new, fresh look to help convey its history and professional journalism.

DESIGN PROCESS

The logo that the Western Herald had at the time when we were approached was awkward. It had poor use of space, and the herald’s horn was hard to identify.

I was tasked with designing a new logo for the project.

The logo had to fit with the Western Herald’s word mark. It had to feel well-rounded and balanced.

RESULTS

The new logo was a herald that was identifiable. Not just identifiable, but bold and bright.

With the collective work of the group, we developed a brand new look for the Western Herald that felt professional and authoritative.

The new logo fit in the masthead effectively. The beams of light helped to fill in the space without weighing it down or leaving it empty.

The new design can be applied to the Western Herald’s various outlets. Whether it’s a newsstand, or a website.
